PROJECT 01 - Hope Vanam
Our club Rotary Club of Coimbatore Smartcity took Environment project during its first year under able leadership of Charter President Rtn Manish Vyas.

The dream project was commenced 4 years back with Siruthuli, Home of Hope and Spark Round table Coimbatore which finally took shape in couple to years and now from barren land it’s converted into lush green forest. The worth of the project done was 1 crore where we planted 33,000 trees and it converted 11acres barren land into green forest. It also brought along flora and fauna and main vision was to have a green space which can provide oxygen to entire community.

The inauguration was done in graceful presence of DRM Shri U Subba Rao IRSME, and ADRM Shri A Annadurai IRSS, southern railways and they really appreciated the efforts and the work done towards the environment protection by afforestation of barren land at ondipudur area.
The project location, identification and the execution were allotted to Siruthuli of Coimbatore, with the barren land provided by the Southern Railways at Ondipudur in Coimbatore City. Thus started this ambitious task BY VANITHA MOHAN to create a “lung” space in the City of Coimbatore. The first step of the work was cleaning the land area which was covered with wild invasive weed and thorny Juliflora.

The planting commenced on 20 May 2020 and around 15 native varieties of plants very endemic to the Western Ghats like Punnai, Marutham, Maghizham, Pungan etc, were planted.
This is the only place in Tamil Nadu that is using sewage water for more than 10 acres of land. Today it is absolutely heartening to see the project speaking for itself, displaying the vast lush green plant coverage.

WHY PLANT 33,000 TREES? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
- the microclimate change.
There is definitely 3-4 degree change in climate which is conducive to comfortable living.
-The Biodiversity.
The butterflies, bees and birds promote pollination and increase the green forest from 33,000 trees the numbers might increase to each tree is becoming a rain water self harvesting structure. The trees absorb the rain water and harvests the surrounding soil. 11 acres is becoming a harvesting machine, preserving every drop of rain water. The sewage water has been cleaned and been used for irrigation.
The highway's create a lot of pollution by generating carbon dioxide which gets absorbed by these trees. It’s a green initiative and an effort of Rotary Club of coimbatore Smartcity to safeguard our climate change and the environment.

PROJECT 08 -
Rotary Smart City Vocational Training for Blind
To provide employment oriented vocational training to legally blind so that they become positive contributors to society. The visually impaired can lead normal quality of life.
India is the home to the maximum number of visually impaired persons. According to World Health Organization, of the 37 million persons who are blind, 15 million are from India. Coimbatore is hub of eye hospitals with drainage of blind patients from across the country especially nearby states and cities. However, none of the institute is equipped with vocational training facilities that can bring these blind patients in to the mainstream. Apart from eye care facilities, Coimbatore as a city lack in vocational centers for blinds. Ophthalmologists and near and dear of blind patients (specially young age blind patients) find it challenging to seek a career option for them in Coimbatore.
In an effort to fill the above described need, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Smart city is planning to start a project by initiating ”Vocational Training for Blind at Coimbatore” with a vision that these blind patients not only earn for them but earn respect in the society as well and can be a part in nation building. This will not only uplift them but would uplift their family and society at large. As an initial homework, Project leads have already had rounds of meetings with future employers and the supporters with a very positive response.
Rotary Club of Coimbatore Smart City aspires to provide various skill developments at a designated technologically equipped center at Coimbatore.
